SOUTH WAZIRISTAN/PESHAWAR: Two soldiers were killed and another one was injured in cross-border firing near the Afghan border in the country’s northwest, officials said Sunday.
According to an Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) statement, unidentified gunmen from Afghanistan fired at a checkpost in Baramal area. Resultantly, two soldiers identified as Idrees and Arshad embraced martyrdom while Saeed was injured. It said that security forces also gave a befitting response. A senior security official, requesting anonymity, told AFP that the incident took place in the Barmal area of South Waziristan, which shares its borders with Afghanistan’s Paktika province. The incident was confirmed by local administration officials and other senior security sources. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Separately, an improvised explosive device (IED) blast on Sunday inured five security personnel in Kuz Chamarkand area of Mohmand Agency, an ISPR official confirmed.
According to the official, five officials of the Frontier Corps were on routine patrolling in the area when an IED planted by a road blew off with a big bang, injuring them on the spot. Soon after the blast, other officials of the security forces rushed to the spot and shifted the injured soldiers to Agency Headquarter Hospital Ghalanai, Mohmand Agency. Those injured include Qaiser Hayat, Akbarullah, Asad, Sada Muhammad and Noorzeb. He said the officials of the security forces cordoned off the area and started a search operation. The official also confirmed that all the five soldiers were stable.
